Corrupt Rangel Now Facing New Ethics Charges, Hodes And Shaheen Still Clinging To His Filthy Contributions
CONCORD – The New Hampshire Republican State Committee once again called on Congressman Paul Hodes and Senator Jeanne Shaheen to dump the tainted campaign contributions they received from disgraced Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY). Yesterday, a special House subcommittee charged Rangel with serious ethics violations after he improperly obtained several rent-controlled apartments, failed to reveal more than $500,000 in assets, failed to disclose financial arrangements for a villa in the Dominican Republic and used Congressional letterhead to solicit donations for a charity in his name (Time Magazine, 7/22). The NHGOP first called on Hodes and Shaheen to get rid of their Rangel donations in February after the House Ethics Committee admonished the corrupt Congressman for violating House gift rules (POLITICO, 2/25.)
“Charlie Rangel is the poster child for the revolting culture of corruption that has permeated Washington. For months, Paul Hodes and Jeanne Shaheen have refused to take a strong stand against Mr. Rangel’s unethical behavior and return his tainted contributions,” said NHGOP Communications Director Ryan Williams. “It’s time for Paul Hodes and Jeanne Shaheen to finally do the right thing and donate Congressman Rangel’s dirty money to charity. Any attempt by these Democrats to cling to Rangel’s filthy donations will serve as an implicit endorsement of his unethical behavior.”
Congressman Rangel has donated $17,000 to Congressman Hodes and $10,000 to Senator Shaheen.
As of February, Twenty Nine Congressional Democrats – including Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter – had already dumped $411,000 of dirty Rangel money. Many have given their donations to charities in their districts.
