Hypocrisy: Shea-Porter Refusing To Return Tainted Rangel Money

In 2006 Shea-Porter Demanded Her Predecessor Return Delay Donations, In 2010 She’s Refusing To Return Rangel Donations

CONCORD –The Nashua Telegraph (2/28) reports that Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter is refusing to return the $10,000 in tainted campaign contributions she received from disgraced Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY). Rangel was rebuked by the House Ethics Committee last week for deliberately violating Congressional ethics rules and accepting corporate-funded trips to the Caribbean (Albany Times Union, 3/2).
 
During her 2006 campaign, candidate Carol Shea-Porter repeatedly demanded that her predecessor return donations from former Congressman Tom Delay (R-TX) after he was chastised by the Ethics Committee. The money was later returned.
 
In 2010, Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter is refusing to take the exact same course of action and dispose of Congressman Rangel’s tainted donations.
 
“Representative Shea-Porter’s stunning hypocrisy confirms that she has evolved into just another double-talking, Washington politician during her three years in Congress,” said NHGOP Communications Director Ryan Williams. “It’s time for Ms. Shea-Porter to put her money where her mouth is and return Charlie Rangel’s dirty money.” 
 
Other Congressional Democrats have already committed to dumping Rangel’s donations. Congresswoman Niki Tsongas (D-MA) announced this weekend that she will donate the $7,000 in contributions she received from Congressman Rangel to charity (Boston Herald, 2/28). Congressman Jim Himes (D-CT) also pledged to donate his Rangel contributions to charity (Stamford Advocate, 2/27). 
 
“Given the actions of her colleagues, Congresswoman Shea-Porter has absolutely no excuse for refusing to return Congressman Rangel’s tainted donations. New Hampshire voters realize that Ms. Shea-Porter’s unwillingness to part with Mr. Rangel’s dirty money serves as an implicit endorsement of his unethical behavior,” said Williams.
